Although the goal for most laboratory information systems (LIS) is to have 0% downtime, we have found over the years that downtime is inevitable. The fact of the matter is that most LIS companies recommend a complete system re-boot every couple of months at a minimum. And, of course, there is software upgrades, hardware upgrades, LAN upgrades etc. Some months it feels it would be better to go back to a "paper" system.
Unfortunately, the "paper" system has some major draw backs as well. Most noticeably on the part of the poor sap who needs to hand write all the labels for the specimens to be collected.
Thinking there has to be a better way than listening to all the whining, PPAL was created to provided a bar coded label with legible information that could be re-printed if necessary.
The ease of use is astounding. The flexibility, perhaps not so much so, but it works for us. We hope it will for you too!
